Is 32 keys enough to learn piano? ›

Even if you manage to find a keyboard that is not a MIDI controller, 25 to 32 keys simply isn't enough to make the most of your piano learning experience. There are 12 notes that you need to know, and they repeat across the entire keyboard.

Although you can get two hands on a 49-key keyboard, it is limiting for a lot of songs, even pop songs that don't rely on using a big range and advanced techniques. Whether 49-keys is enough for your own needs comes down to personal opinion. If you just want to play a few chords, you might find that 49-keys is plenty.

While you can get started learning the piano with a 25-key keyboard, you won't be able to get very far with such a limited range of notes. A serious piano student is going to need a larger instrument to really develop their piano skills.

If you don't have the desire to fully learn and play the piano, 25 keys is fine. In fact, I actually love it, because it fits on your desk so nicely. No one is actually using these things to play. You are just using it as an assistance to create chords and melodies and what now.

In short: it's never too late to learn piano!

If you like to play one-handed synth leads or basses, 25 keys may be all you need. If you're looking to play piano arrangements, you'll want 61, 76 or possibly all 88 keys. The most popular size for MIDI controllers is 49 keys -- big enough to play two-handed, but not too big to fit on your studio desk.

For a beginner, 66 keys are sufficient for learning to play, and you can play most music on a 72-key instrument. For anyone interested in playing classical piano, however, a full 88 keys are recommended, especially if you plan on one day playing a traditional piano. Many keyboards have fewer than 66 keys.
