Bob Monkhouse has passed away this morning after a two and a half year fight against cancer. I for one regardeded him as one of the very best, no one could beat his excellent timing and incredible wit. Its a very sad day for fans of comedy.

The man was a comedy genius, I didn't see much of his stand up comedy, but the audience with bob monkhouse of late, was hilarious. Probably a wee bit over used term these days...but he was, and is, a legend. His ability to make jokes "off the cuff" as it were, really did leave me gasping in amazement. I can see an endless line of celebs queing up to describe him as "one of the greatest" and "the last of the great entertainers"......for once I agree with the establishment.
"People laughed when I said I was going to be a comedian. They're not laughing now"
.......genius....pure genius:)

He was one of the few comedians who could make me laugh out loud. A very funny & quick witted man.
Let's hope the TV channels give him the tribute he deserves. -

A Great Comedian who will be sorely missed. I heard when I saw the news article on MSNUK this morning.
The BBC will do a tribute program, I thought there was a Bob Monkhouse season on BBC2 (or was that someone else
)
He deserves a tribute though, a big piece of british comedy has been lost

That is a bit shocking, have only just found out from here.
I didn't even know he had cancer.

A true genius and one who managed to battle through his low points when he dropped out of fashion to regain his credibility and bowed out at the top.
Like all older comedians, Bob went through a trough and his was in the early 80's (around family fortunes time i think) and he was seen as old hat and stale when the "alternative comedy" crowd started to emerge. In fact, I remember some of those "comedians" taking the piss out of Bob on stage. Those that did are no longer around, and those that didn't - like Ben Elton - are still around as they know what real comedy is and who has a place in history and who will not.
But, because he was so superb and astonishingly clever, he won through.
Like someone said, I am pretty sure the BBC have something up their sleeve as it is no real surprise that he has gone.
And finally, anyone who has no idea why Bob has this affection, treat yourself to some stuff from the 50's that he did - you just might recognise some of it from todays comedians.......

I'd recommend anyone try to get hold of his autobiography, Crying With Laughter (out of print at the moment, but I'm sure it will get a new edition).
Stunning stuff, masses of amazing stories. For example, he almost went to prison in the early eighties after falsely being accused of pirating films (cine films).
Rest in peace, and thankyou Bob.

Being a student in the 80s I put Mr Monkhouse firmly in the "old school" comics catagory and considered him irelevant to british comedy. It was only when I stumbled upon his autobography that I realised what a genuinly funny and talented guy he was. His passing is a sad day for the british entertainment industry.

What about the incident during an edition of "The Golden Shot", when it turned out that a phone-in contestant was actually calling from a phone box outside a TV rental shop.
RIP Bob.

People called him the British Bob Hope, and to a degree I understand that. But he really set the trend for Bob Hope at times, writing jokes for him.
The standard bearer for stand up comedy. Will be missed.

Its funny isnt it how everyone is now calling him a "comic genius" and a great comedien, well when he was alive alot of people were calling him "cheesy" and "passed it"
Not saying that people here have been saying those things, just the general public and the media in general.
I for one thought he was a great classic "old skool" style comedien. Surelly miss from me anyways:(

One of the many jokes of Bobs that has been said on tribute on the radio and TV is one I just heard on Radio Five..
"I sleep naked.. I like it very much. Its very confortable, even on those long flights...."
He was brilliant. I remember laughing to him when I was six, and I still do laugh thinking of him. A great loss to a great many.
May I also apologise for my miss-spelling and use of "Sky Sports" in the link in my initial post in this thread, I was all out of sorts only just hearing of this sad news.
Thank you
Dan

The sad part about Bob's death is that there is no one coming up to replace him and his like.
The experience and skills of the immediate post war writers and comedians are just not there now.
I watched the "Audience with Bob" over Christmas and as usual it was brilliant, even though I had seen it around ten years ago.
I never believed the circumstances about copyright issues surrounding his film collection and thought he was very badly treated.
But I suppose in Bob's shoes you always make enemies.
Sadly missed.

Frank Skinner says it best in his book: "Forget all the crappy game shows, Bob Monkhouse is our Bob Hope"
RIP.

They're replacing tonight's 11.30pm scheduled repeat edition of Room 101, which was due to feature Ricky Gervais, with one featuring Bob Monkhouse.
SOME tribute!
